About this package
Spiti Valley Tour Packages from Varanasi is a 6 nights 7 days plan covering Shimla, Kalpa, Kaza (Spiti Valley), Chandratal and Manali. Your stay includes rooms on twin sharing with breakfast and dinner, a private car for transfers and sightseeing, and a day-wise itinerary that you can change to suit your dates, group and budget. You travel to Chandigarh or Delhi and our driver takes it from there; the land package starts at your arrival point. Tickets from Varanasi are not part of the package price, and we can help you choose and book them. Spiti is a high-altitude cold desert, so the route you can take depends on the season (see the route table below).
Shimla is the old summer capital of British India, and the Shimla and Kinnaur route starts here and follows the Sutlej valley towards Spiti. Kalpa is a quiet Kinnaur village at about 2,960 m, known for its apple orchards, old temples and views of the Kinner Kailash range, and it is a gentle first step up in altitude. Kaza is the largest town of Spiti and its base, at about 3,800 m, with a small market, cafes and the roads to Key Monastery, Kibber and the high villages of Langza, Hikkim and Komic.

Day-wise itinerary
6 nights 7 days: Shimla (1N) + Kalpa (1N) + Kaza (Spiti Valley) (2N) + Chandratal (1N) + Manali (1N). Tap a day to open it.
Day 1 Arrive in Chandigarh or Delhi and drive to Shimla
Reach Chandigarh or Delhi from Varanasi (see the travel section below). Our driver meets you at the airport or railway station and drives to Shimla: about 3.5 to 4 hours (roughly 115 km) from Chandigarh or 8 to 9 hours from Delhi, with breaks. Check in and rest. Evening walk on Mall Road, Scandal Point, The Ridge and Christ Church.
Day 2 Shimla to Kalpa via Narkanda
Early start for a long scenic drive of about 8 to 9 hours via Narkanda and Rampur, with tea and meal stops, as the road follows the Sutlej valley into Kinnaur. Reach Kalpa by evening, check in and rest. Evening walk through the village lanes and apple orchards, with views of the Kinner Kailash range when the sky is clear.
Day 3 Kalpa to Kaza via Nako and Tabo
Long day of about 8 to 9 hours through the dry Kinnaur and Spiti landscape, with stops at Nako Lake and Tabo Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in the region. Reach Kaza by evening, check in and rest. Short walk in Kaza town and an early night to adjust to the altitude.
Day 4 Langza, Hikkim, Komic, Key Monastery and Kibber
Early start for a full day in the high villages: Langza and its Buddha statue, the Hikkim post office and Komic, then Key Monastery, Kibber village and the Chicham bridge on the way back. It is a long day at altitude, so we go slowly with tea and rest stops. Ask for a longer plan if you want a gentler pace and a separate Dhankar and Pin Valley day.
Day 5 Kaza to Chandratal via Kunzum Pass
Drive from Kaza over the Kunzum Pass (about 4,550 m) to Batal and the Chandratal campsite, about 4 to 5 hours on rough road. Stop at the Kunzum temple on the way. Overnight in a camp near the lake (tents with beds and blankets; nights are near freezing). Walk to the lake and watch the light change on the water, then a cold, clear night in camp.
Day 6 Chandratal to Manali
Morning at the lake, then drive back via Batal, Gramphu and the Atal Tunnel, about 6 to 7 hours on rough then smooth road. Reach Manali by evening, check in and rest. Evening at Mall Road and the Tibetan market.
Day 7 Departure
Breakfast and check-out. Drop at Chandigarh (about 8 to 9 hours) or Delhi (about 12 to 14 hours) for your onward journey, or at Bhuntar airport when seasonal flights operate. Because the mountain drive is long, book onward tickets for the evening or the next day.
Which road is open when
Spiti has two ways in, and only one of them stays open through winter.
| Route | Usually open | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shimla, Kinnaur and Kaza (via Kalpa, Nako, Tabo) | Most of the year | The only route that can stay open in winter, though snow and landslides can close stretches for a day or more |
| Manali, Kunzum Pass and Kaza | About June to October | Closes with the first heavy snow, and the dates change every year |
| Chandratal | About June to September | Needs the Kunzum road, and is snowbound in winter |
This plan includes Chandratal and the Kunzum Pass road, so it runs only when that road is open. Outside the season we run the same plan out and back through Kinnaur instead, usually at a similar price. Road dates change every year, so message us your travel dates and we confirm the current status before you book.

Altitude and your health
Heights are approximate. Kaza is the main night stop, and the sights around it are higher still.
| Place | Approximate height |
|---|---|
| Shimla | about 2,200 m |
| Manali | about 2,050 m |
| Kalpa | about 2,960 m |
| Kaza | about 3,800 m |
| Chandratal | about 4,300 m |
| Kunzum Pass | about 4,550 m |
| Key Monastery | about 4,160 m |
| Kibber | about 4,270 m |

| Komic | about 4,500 m |
- Take the first day slowly, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and heavy meals on arrival at height
- Headache, nausea, unusual breathlessness or poor sleep can be signs of altitude sickness, so tell your driver early and do not climb higher if you feel worse
- Ask your doctor about altitude medicine before you travel, and check first if you have heart, lung or blood pressure problems
- Children, elders and anyone unwell should take the slower plan with an extra night
Where you will stay
Stays in Spiti are simpler than in other hill stations, and rooms are limited. Areas are indicative and the exact property is confirmed at booking.
| Stay level | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Budget | Homestays and guesthouses with clean, basic rooms; bathrooms and hot water can be simple |
| Standard (most popular) | Better hotels and homestays with attached bathrooms, and a room heater or wood stove when cold |
| Premium | The best hotels and resorts available at each stop; still simpler than similar hotels in Shimla or Manali |
Usual areas: Shimla: Mall Road side, Chhota Shimla, Kufri road; Kalpa: Kalpa and Reckong Peo side, rooms with Kinner Kailash views where available; Kaza (Spiti Valley): Kaza town, near the main market; Chandratal: Campsite near the lake (tents); Manali: Old Manali, Aleo, Mall Road side, Prini. Chandratal is always a tent camp, with beds and blankets, and toilet arrangements vary by camp.
Best time to travel
- Shimla: Shimla is pleasant from March to June and September to November. December to February is cold, with a chance of snow (not guaranteed).
- Kalpa: Kalpa is pleasant from March to June and from September to November. Winters are cold, with heavy snow possible.
- Kaza (Spiti Valley): Kaza is best from June to October, when both the Manali and Shimla roads are usually open. In winter it can be reached only from the Shimla side through Kinnaur, depending on snow, and nights are well below freezing.
- Chandratal: Chandratal can be reached roughly from June to September, when the Kunzum road is open. It is snowbound and closed in winter.
- Manali: Manali is green and pleasant from March to June, snowy from December to February, and best avoided in heavy monsoon (July-August) because of landslide risk.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | June to September | Main season: both routes usually open, Chandratal reachable and skies clear. The busiest months, so book early. |
| Autumn | October to early November | Clear and colder, with golden valleys. The Kunzum road can close after the first snow. |
| Winter | December to March | Shimla and Kinnaur route only. Very cold, with snow, limited stays and a quiet landscape. Sightings of snow leopard are possible around Kibber and Langza but never guaranteed. |
| Spring | April to May | Kinnaur route open and the Manali side usually not yet. Cold, with patches of snow, and quieter. |
Spiti itself is a dry rain-shadow valley, but the approach roads, especially in Kinnaur and on the Manali side, can see landslides in July and August.
Travel tips for Spiti Valley
- Carry warm layers even in summer, because nights at Kaza and Chandratal are close to freezing, plus sunscreen, sunglasses and lip balm for the strong sun
- Carry a valid photo ID for every traveller, and enough cash, because ATMs in Kaza may be out of order and cards are not accepted everywhere
- Mobile networks are patchy in Kinnaur and Spiti, so tell family your plan and download offline maps before you leave
- Mountain roads wind a lot, so carry motion-sickness tablets and some snacks and water for the long drive days
- Keep one spare day in your plan, because landslides, snow or a damaged road can delay the journey
- Foreign nationals should check the current permit rules for Kinnaur and Spiti before travelling
- Packing light helps, because rooms are small and the drive is long

What is the best time to visit Spiti Valley?
June to October is the main season, when both the Manali and Shimla roads are usually open. Winter (December to March) is possible only from the Shimla side and depends on snow and road clearance.
What about altitude sickness?
Kaza is at about 3,800 m, and Chandratal and the passes are higher. Take the first day slowly, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and tell your driver at once if you feel unwell. Check with your doctor first if you have heart, lung or blood pressure problems.
